Cullercoats' Heritage

Cullercoats boasts a rich heritage tied to its fishing village past and its subsequent development as an artist's colony. The village, established in 1539, was once a hub for fishing, salt production, and coal export. Its maritime history is evident in landmarks like the Watch House and the Lifeboat Station.

Cullercoats also became a haven for artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracting notable figures like Winslow Homer. Some of the most notable topics are its Maritime History, Cullercoats' origins are deeply rooted in fishing, with a history of shipbuilding and a strong connection to the sea. The Watch House, built in 1879, played a crucial role in the village's coastal defence and is now a restored landmark.

Artist Colony, Cullercoats gained fame as an artists' colony in the late 19th century, attracting painters who were drawn to the village's unique character and coastal scenery. It’s Lifeboat Station.
